  1. Correction : Goods from Bridoon Close found behind Candlewood Close on pipe track. Personal CD's & CD cases & drivers licence. There has been ongoing probing for the last week in the area. Longkloof (across the Disa) report breakin to Lodge (Sunbird) same evening +- 02h00. Possible movement back along pipe track as evidenced by movement under Fynbos gate BN

  2. VJ : Thanks for update. It seems that the blog will be our only indication of crime patterns now that SAPS unilaterally withdrew our weekly reports (does anyone else think that is a disgrace?). The constantia vineyards initiatives may be pushing the activity back our way. If Longkloof is being targetted, its only a matter of time before they, Overkloof and Tarragona have another incident.

  3. wrt 'unilateral withdrawal' of reports - here I go stirring the pot again!
Maybe you should bear in mind that 1/ there is a new Supt, 2/ that there is NO current NW Liaison 3/ that SAPS HB are in current 'restructuring'...again...4/ that 'they' HAVE NEVER BEEN OBLIGED TO GIVE US THIS INFO.
I think it extremely presumptuous to call it 'our' report. It is NOT 'ours' - it belongs to SAPS - they shared it out of courtesy etc and if you recall, against national instructions.
Instead of bitching and taking little public forum side swipes at them, why not 'get down and dirty' with them instead. Maybe that way some good can come of your concerns.
I am sure that this response will illicit huge outrage. Tough.

  4. Crime statistics were always available in the old days despite being written up manually and for a few years after 1994. The current government chooses to withhold the crime statistics from the victims of crime for purely political reasons in my estimation. I can think of no other reason.

Hout Bay may be unique in South Africa in that we have a 35000 thousand strong squatter community within the “Village / Town” as opposed to other areas where the squatter communities are generally on the outskirts of town. This means criminal activities originate from within the heart of the Village. This exposes residents to exceptional crimes and crime in general.

The police are forever appealing to the public to help them in the fight against crime but they choose to sit on the crime stat’s which the public would need to see in order for them to accept that there is a problem and they need to help. To this end the police in Hout Bay go to extraordinary lengths to dissuade victims of crime from opening cases further bamboozling residents into a false sense of security.

Withholding crime stat’s lulls residents into a false sense of security and exposes them to crime. In this light withholding stat’s is a crime committed by SAPS!

Almost every arrest or deflection of criminals in this valley has been a result of access to crime reports and statistics. The arrest of the beach muggers would never have happened if the incidents of mugging weren’t recorded and distributed. The December Beach op which kept the beach crime free for the holidays would never have happened if the incidents that led to that op were withheld. The raids by gangs into the Village from the mountain would be going ahead unabated if the pattern hadn’t been picked up and acted upon. There’s a whole lot more documented.

If there is an “organized and armed” gang active in the Valley as there is, I think it’s the duty of SAPS to let the community know this. If houses are being burgled regularly in the area where I reside I think it’s the duty of SAPS to let me know. If someone is murdered and the murderer is loose in the Valley, as there is, I think it’s the duty of SAPS to let us know. Again there’s a whole lot more that can be added.

Releasing stat’s needs just a few mouse clicks, so time and resources cannot be the reason they aren’t. The data is already there. The fact that they have been released up to now means there is a way or someone would be facing criminal prosecution right now.

  5. My comment stands...."why not 'get down and dirty' with them instead. Maybe that way some good can come of the concerns"....go and and have a 1 on 1 with the supt. Quitely, rationally, clearly, without the retorics and bullshit. The measure of how 'good' WE are, is not by the public sideswipes, ITS BY OUR INTERACTION WITH SAPS ! Of being able to RESOLVE our concerns in an amicable manner. About making them feel good about working with us! If we want respect, give respect ! My last word cause I dont believe that we will achieve anything in a tit for tat public debate.

  6. From a reader:
Today’s Cape Times had an appeal titled “Police need help to find Robbery Suspect” where they are asking for the public’s assistance to find a suspect involved in the September Kwik Spar armed robbery and several other robberies in Hout Bay. They say the man’s picture was captured by surveillance cameras in the store as well as other shops in Hout Bay. The public are invited to contact the Cape War Room on 021 467 8092.

Your guess is as good as mine as to why a) We find this out in the press, b) Why its 6 months later and c) Why they don’t publish the picture.

Neither CPF, HBNW or other bodies in Hout Bay have ever been contacted by SAPS Hout Bay for assistance regarding the above.
