Maybe a warning for the blog? A new scam is going around. A man calls and introduces himself as a brother of the maid in the house, and gives the right name of the maid. He explains that the maid has suddenly died and the family needs money to transport the body for burial in the Eastern cape. Can we come and collect the money immediately?
We know of two separate incidents during the last week. In one case the man suggested R4000.
As reported on the BKM website: "Resident reports - CON ARTIST AT WORK - On Friday early evening we had a phone call from a man called David who said that he was the brother of my full time char who has worked for us for 20 years. He said that she had been killed in a car accident in Khayelitsha and that he needed cell phone voucher to phone the rest of the family. He left his cell phone number with us and we bought him a voucher and phoned it through to him. He asked how much it was for and we told him R55 and he said that it wasn't enough and put the phone down. At 9.00 pm he phoned back and said he needed money for the funeral on Monday. After phoning the mortuary etc on Saturday morning and not being able to find any record of her accident the mans cell phone number was phoned from Kirstenhof police station. When the man heard who was phoning he put the phone down. The Char has since been contacted alive and well and of course there was no accident!
