A quiet, early morning walk turned into a nightmare for a Hout Bay woman when she was raped on a Llandudno beach.

The 50-year-old woman, who cannot be named, was walking her dogs at around 8am on Sunday when she was approached by a "screaming man" who spoke only Afrikaans, according to Hout Bay police spokesperson Inspector Tanya Lesch.

A scuffle ensued between the two as the woman tried to fight off the suspect, Lesch said. He raped her on the rocks at Sandy Bay beach.

"She tried to fight him off and that's how they landed up at a part of the beach where there are some rocks," she said.

The man then robbed the woman of her jewellery and fled the scene.

Police said a couple who had also been walking their dogs came across the woman and alerted police.

The woman was able to provide police with a clear description of the man.

"Someone was arrested not long after the incident, but he was later released. The woman asked to see him and when she did, she confirmed to police it was not the man responsible for the incident," Lesch said.

A case of rape has been opened for investigation.
