Last night I heard the callout for volunteers to assist with the fire in Scarborough. But the fact that the callout was for the fire was apparently very secret. Why is this?
ReplyDeleteIt seems that even those having radios had be shielded from the information that CERT was leaving to assist with the fire.
One can understand that some information should be withheld when it involves actions against criminal activity, since the criminals and their friends may have access to the radio transmissions, but the degree of mystery surrounding many radio tramsmissions insults the rest of us peasants who may find it useful to know what is going on........
Interesting comment from ricball, because I was also listening to the "mustering of CERT troops" and others before they went over the mountain, and I didn't get an impression of secrecy. Well done to all those who heeded the call.
ReplyDeleteAs I recall the call went for volunteers, then it was advised that it was specifically CERT members. There is a whole process for activating CERT and perhaps this leads to some confusion. Entilini were also not particularly helpful. For the record +/- 10 vehicles went over to Ocean View. The CERT team was asked to assist a bunch of Rasta's who were living right next to the fire. We checked properties and then moved to another area where two of the team members woke a family of 2 kids and 3 adults who were fast asleep in a mountain shack directly in front of the fire. That may have well saved their lives.
ReplyDeleteThere is no secret to CERT, We do however apply shielded radio communication for operational reasons only. Two hbnw's did respond to our call-out and volunteered to join CERT during this incident. If the radio is used for a call-out anyone is welcome to volunteer. In this incident, after we had mustered, we received our directives from Disaster Managment Cape Town and the local SAPS in Queensview.
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome to apply for a CERT membership.
